Do you use travel as an excuse not to work out? Do you struggle with jet lag, or you’re just too tired to make it to the gym? I’ve found a few ways around these obstacles.
Jet Lag
Working out is one of the best tools I know to combat jet lag. If you are flying internationally, one of the best things you can do to acclimate to your new time zone is to workout. Getting outside for a walk in the bright sunlight will help reset your circadian rhythm, and walking barefoot in the grass or sand will help to ground you after your long flight. Well and Good has a great article explaining more about how this works, but the easiest thing for me is just to head downstairs to the hotel gym and hit the elliptical and weights.
During Your Trip
Have you ever had an extended delay at the airport? Or what about just a long connection time in between flights? The Hilton O’Hare in Terminal 2 offers a day rate with discounts for crew members.
The Dallas airport has an amazing facility in the Grand Hyatt DFW which is connected to the airport. This fitness center offers views of the airport, an outdoor swimming pool, and a roof top deck. There is also a steam room to relax in after your workout.
Both of these facilities in Dallas and Chicago offer showers, towels, body wash, hairdryers, and large lockers to fit your rollerboard suitcase in.
I’m keeping an eye out for more airports with gyms on the premises. What a great use of your time, and what a fantastic way to uplift your mood! On all of my Chicago trips, I felt like a million bucks on the way home, and all of those problems the passengers had on the plane were no big deal! If you’ve ever flown with me, you know I’m a much better flight attendant when I can come to work after a yoga class or a workout . 😉
